A short study of the Language Movement and its Effect on Pakistani Paper Currency afterword. As I collected some old Pakistani Paper Currency and try to look little closely, I found some interesting connection with our Language Movement-Bengali Nationalism-Provincial Autonomy- and finally Bangladesh Movement in 1971. Paper Currency of the Last British Raj, which both Independent Pakistan and New India Used for some time until they print their Own New Currency- British Raj honored 7 major language of the Indian Sub-Continent and Bangla is there. Just after 15th. August, 1947 Pakistan and India had to use same Paper Currency of the “Government of India” (British India) with the EMPEROR GEORGE VI KING head and the Seal printed. “Government of Pakistan” was specially printed in English and Urdu only on one side. The value of each bill was written in 7 different languages including Bengali (3rd. line). I put four photos, #1. One Rupee/এক টাকা (O/42 225908 A), #2. Two Rupee/ দুই টাকা (G/35 021159), #3. Five Rupee/পাচ টাকা (A/61 438975) and # 4. Ten Rupee (H/88 587481). While British India respect the major language group spoken all over the India (The British Raj). But the newly Independent Leaders of Pakistan failed to understand this basic thing.
Now let us see what we gain after become Independent from the British Raj. The first Paper Currency Printed by the Independent Pakistan Government. #5. One Rupee (E/4 048119). Here the denomination is written in only Bengali numeric (১)on the top and bottom corner, rest everything is in Urdu. # 6. One Rupee (R/90 838474), almost same only color change. (This bill was in circulation till 1972 in new Independent Bangladesh). #7. 5 rupee (ET 745071) of 1948 and no Bengali on any side! #8. 100 Rupee (P 932518) of 1953, but no space for Bangla. #9. One Rupee (N 119473), Wow! Here we can see some more change, on the bottom left corner Bengali in word (এক টাকা) and in numeric (১).

#10.Five Rupee (AL/I 712515)of 1952. Picture of Bengal river boat carrying Jute, Bengali in word (পাচ টাকা)and in numeric (৫)on two corner of both side. Quite a good and positive change.

In 60’s Military Government Ayub Khan tried to Pacify East Pakistani to get public support. New Bank note started to circulate. Where we see more use of Bengali Language. IS THIS THE EFFECT OF FIRST BLOOD SHED FOR LANGUAGE ON 21st. FEBRUARY 1952, IN WORLD HISTORY? But by that time lot of water flow down through Padma, Jomuna, and Meghna. The scar and mistrust only increased by the continuous Political, Economical and Social Exploitation by the West Pakistan. February 5, 1966: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Announce 6 Points in Lahore. The effect we can notice on the later part of 60’s to 1970. The following Bill will prove that. Here we notice the presence Bengali Language is almost half of Urdu. Now it is 22 years gone after Independence from the British Raj. But is it too late for a United Pakistan?
New Bilingual currency bill of Pakistan- #11.

State Bank of Pakistan also circulates some Special Currency bill only for hajj pilgrims from Pakistan. Only to be used in Saudi Arabia during Hajj. #16. Ten rupee (A/5 976093), #17. One Hundred Rupee (A/6 559802) and #18. Ten Taka/ দশ টাকা (T 993776). Only few of them with Bangla during the later part.

Mahbubur Rashid the first Bengali and the 4th. Governor of State Bank of Pakistan was appointed on July 20, 1967. We now notice the Bengali Mahbubur Rashid put his signature in Bangla firs time. On #19. Ten rupee/Ten Taka Bill (TV/2 738702), which is with older design with Bengali in word (দশ টাকা) and in numeric (১0) only. The last Bill #20. Ten Taka/Ten Rupee (R543937) with Mahbubur Rashid’s Bangla signature is the latest design with half Bangla representation.

Though those change and development so far we see on the above Pakistani Currency bill circulated by State Bank of Pakistan till 1970 but Government of Pakistan Never change their Original One Rupee Bill.
Please note the last photo of #21. One Rupee/ এক টাকা(AH/40 787385). Here the denomination is written in only Bengali numeric (১) on the top and bottom corner, rest everything is in Urdu. By the beginning of 1969 Ayub fall and the 3rd. Military Gen. Yahya Khan came to power but the Bengali Nationalism grow stronger than ever and full Provincial Autonomy was demanded under 6 points program from the East Pakistan. After Pakistan’s First General Election of 1970 the Military Generals and West Pakistani Leader failed to hand over Power to the majority Leader Sheik Mujibur Rahman. Instead start Military aggression against East Pakistan on the late night of 25th. Mar, 1971. Pakistani Military Lost and unconditionally surrender on 16th. Dec. 1971. THE END OF PAKISTAN.
From 20th. December 1971 New Bangladesh Government continue to use old Pakistani Currency with “BANGLADESH” Stamped on them until new Bangladesh own currency bill printed.

First Bangladeshi Paper Currency of 1972. #22. এক টাকা/One Taka (A/5 087922) Front and #23 এক টাকা/One Taka (A/5 087922) Back.
